Des Cimes 2008
by Laura Davis
The Rally Des Cimes; the event that most of us, me included, spend all year looking forward to……..
The Stunning views, the good weather (most of the time), good company, food and drink & most importantly the harsh terrain which makes this event the most spectacular event of the season both to race & to watch.
The race this year was of its usual structure, but with a few adjustments with Bois De Bedat (which turned out to be a let down for most) & Viodos Mauleon as Prologue stages on Friday.
Starting off a misty Saturday morning was Salhagagne, though much smoother than previous years followed by an extended Mehatze then onto Occabe (the best for acquiring punctures for most) then Mehatze again & onto a rather slippery Bandetia to finish the day at Licq.
A very hot Sunday morning began with Uthurry Handia followed by Esquiule, a bad stage for some, then out to Ambeltze, onto Barcus for Barcus Suhola and finally back to Tardets for the spectacular finale of Tardets Madeline run twice.
Friday for many I think was a bit of a disappointment with a day of stopping & starting and some only running through 1 stage out of 2. Bois De Bedat was run by the front runners but many became stuck in the boggy parts in the trees causing blockages and the stage start to stop further runners departing. The organizers decided to cancel the rest of the stage and therefore everyone had a standard stage time and their times for Viodos Mauleon were the ones they went from for running order for Saturday morning.
Saturday started off for most very well with the Urrutia brothers, the local boys who own a garage in Mauleon, getting scratch for most stages, but with the usual likes of Orhategaray & Garicoix not far behind who always do well at Des Cimes.
Unfortunately for Dan Lofthouse he had clutch & brake problems on the liason from Salhagagne to Mehatze & so made the decision to discontinue any further on Saturday.
Mehatze 1 was not a good stage for Terry & Chris as they, for some unknown reason, lost fuel pressure & stopped half way round the stage losing time. Luckily it suddenly came back & they managed to continue but with a nasty puncture down to the rim made it difficult to regain any time.
Occabe & Mehatze 2 went well without any further problems other than punctures, which really goes without saying, but Orhategaray lost a lot of time coming 31st on Mehatze 2.
Bandetia was the most eventful stage of the day taking runners out & causing many to become stuck in a very slippery, boggy ditch.
Orhategaray & Matt Harrison had problems on Liason to Bandetia taking them out, & Morisse & Garat amongst others were taken out in Bandetia.
Sunday was a good day; Dan Lofthouse managed to fix his car so he could race under the Super Rally rules of Sunday runners & did spectacularly well, especially on Madeline 2; he absolutely flew up the hill as if it wasn’t even there with 7th fastest stage time, which for his first time at Cimes I think is awesome – it was amazing to watch!
Esquiule unfortunately took Robin & Howard out with a rear suspension problem, which was disappointing as they were the top Brit runners up until then.
Terry & Chris had ended up running in the 40’s after their problem from Mehatze, but the organisers kindly agreed to give them a 3 minute gap on stage start after the 2-wheel drive car in front so that they didn’t catch it up & lose more time.
Tim Henry had problems throughout the day with his car in 2 wheel drive, but again still managed to do incredibly well.
Chris Hammond was the fastest Brit up Madeline 2, with 6th fastest time which is awesome being that he was unsure he would even get to the end of Cimes as he’d not managed to finish an English event in his new Milner.
Mark & Clare Budgen finished Madeline 2 with many punctures, but still managing 12th fastest on stage!
An absolutely brilliant result all round for the Brits:
Hammond 9th
Budgen 11th
Henry 18th
Banyard 19th
With the top 3 finishers of:
1st Urrutia, with a massive lead of 55.6 seconds
2nd Garicoix
3rd Hirigoyen
Once more a fantastic event, roll on next year!
See you all at the Dunes.
